Centro Hospitalar do Tâmega e Sousa, EPE The Tâmega and Vale do Sousa region is currently served by the Centro Hospitalar do Tâmega e Sousa, EPE. The CHTS serves an area which includes the counties of Amarante, Baião, Castelo de Paiva, Felgueiras, Lousada, Marco de Canaveses, Paços de Ferreira, Paredes, Penafiel and Resende, with a total population of more than half a million people. 
The Centro Hospitalar do Tâmega e Sousa, EPE (CHTS) has joined two hospital units (Padre Américo Hospital, in Penafiel and São Gonçalo Hospital, in Amarante) under the same administration, since 28th September 2007. The Padre Américo Hospital, in Penafiel, was established in 27th October 2001. António Guterres, the Portuguese Prime Minister at that time, was present at the opening ceremony. The São Gonçalo hospital was established in 19th December of 1961 and was installed in one old quarter of artillery. Currently the Hospital has 90 beds.

- Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health
- Paredes Hospital
The scattering services linked with the impossibility to endow all those hospitals with the adjusted technologies and accommodations towards an efficient health care, justified the conception and construction of this new Hospital. The Hospital was then classified as one of most moderns Hospital Units among the National Health Service (Serviço Nacional de Saúde - SNS). Planned to satisfy the needs of its target population, Padre Américo Hospital began his activity in June 2001. Since its establishment the Hospital integrates information and communication technologies and has always been improving them. The sophistication of that technology turns this Hospital Unit into an example of Modernization, answering the population needs. The Padre Américo Hospital has 348 beds. The São Gonçalo hospital was established in 19th December of 1961 and was installed in one old quarter of artillery. Currently the Hospital has 90 beds. Innovation/Quality Today Padre Américo Hospital is a modern health care unit with a remarkable progress in health cares and diagnosis technologies.  Beyond the technologies in the medical area, the CHTS was the first Public Hospital in Portugal to promote an internal television channel (Hospital TV), broadcasted in the whole building areas, with useful information for everyone.
With a strong commitment to humanization in health care services, the CHTS was the first Hospital to create the possibility to send free postcards to the in-patients, through its internet site. In March, 2006, the Services of Immunohaemotherapy and Sterilization were certificated by SGS, through norm ISO 9001:2000. Since 11th July Hospital Padre Américo is Acreditated by the Joint Commission International.
